10 Expensive Hobbies of the Rich and Famous

The rich and famous know how to have fun even when hobbies entail spending a lot of cash in just a few minutes. But what are they doing when they’re not leading companies, starring in movies and dancing their way through those many festivals in Europe? Let’s find out!

1. Yacht renting (or owning)

Some of the most expensive toys millionaires can give themselves are yachts. In fact, this just might be the most common way they love to spend time — out in the open sea, with some friends, a few other famous people, etc. It’s a luxury reserved only for those who have made a name for themselves in the world and are willing to spend at least a few hundred million dollars on a boat.

Still, can we blame them? If we had that much money, we would probably pick up a yacht or two ourselves!

2. Collecting vintage cars (or any cars, for that matter)

Millionaires, especially men, are known for their love of vintage cars. Thus, most of them have a few of these parked in their garages. Moreover, when they run out of vintage options, they opt for the newest releases by Tesla, Bentley, and Porsche. After all, with that kind of money, getting somewhere as fast as possible is a luxury they can certainly afford.

3. Flying planes

On that note, we should mention that most rich and famous people have an underlying fascination with planes. We are not sure where this love comes from, but people like John Travolta have certainly put it to good use. Most of them even have licenses. Hence, they don’t even have to hire a pilot for their private jet — they can fly it themselves!

4. Traveling all over the world

And where would they fly off to? Well, anywhere! The truth of the matter is, when you have a lot of money, the world is your oyster. You can go anywhere, and you can get a visa for pretty much any country in the world. Thus, although money cannot buy happiness, it sure can allow you to meet new people and get to know different cultures without having to worry about a mortgage, for example.

5. Keeping exotic pets (and horses)

We all know that horses are expensive and that they need a lot of maintenance, but just imagine how much a tiger would cost! No idea? Well, Mike Tyson surely knows because he bought one to keep it as a pet. In essence, since they have the money, the rich and famous can actually afford to keep a variety of exotic animals and horses as pets. Hugh Hefner even had a semi-decent zoo in his mansion!

6. Collecting antiques

Having a savings account full of money makes it easy for someone to nurture hobbies such as collecting antiques. Indeed, this is a fine way to spend one’s time, as it’s not only satisfying but interesting as well. Getting to know different cultures and feeling a piece of history under your fingertips — that’s the beauty of what money can buy.

7. Collecting art

Similarly to collecting antiques, the rich and famous also love to spend their hard-earned money on art. Most of them would even pay a real fortune to get just one masterpiece of famous painters such as Leonardo da Vinci on their wall. However, even though that sometimes isn’t possible, they are still well known for their exquisite taste in art and for appreciating new artists.

8. Winemaking

Wouldn’t we all love to have a vineyard or two and make our own brand of wine? Of course! But sadly, we don’t have enough money to buy such a luxury. Nevertheless, those who do are using it well by buying land, managing staff and waiting patiently for the grapes to mature.

9. Collecting clothes and accessories

Although very superficial on the outside, collecting things like accessories and clothing is a very popular hobby. Indeed, most rich and famous women love having not just one, but a dozen Birkin bags within their reach. Moreover, this hobby is actually sort of like investing. You never know how much something will be worth in the future. In any case, they can always sell some of their stuff at an auction and donate to charity, which makes this hobby essentially a good one.

10. Philanthropy

Finally, huge paychecks and incredible properties are fantastic, but most millionaires are famous because of how open they are to giving to charity. What’s more, their philanthropic endeavors have made incredible things possible and a lot of people happy.

Oprah Winfrey once gave each person in her audience a car, and let’s not even start about the amount of money Bill and Melinda Gates give to those in need every year. In essence, money hasn’t changed some of these people; while they do love their hobbies, it’s safe to say that they’re always focused on sharing at least a little bit of their fortune with others.
